No. 18 Arizona Defeats Cal in Pac-10 Opener


TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Tatum Brown scored 15 points as No. 18 Arizona defeated California 71-58 Thursday night in a Pac-10 opener for both teams.

The Wildcats (12-1, 1-0) led 39-34 at the half after hitting only 35 percent from the field but warmed up slightly to build a double-digit lead midway through the second half.

Brown snagged eight rebounds. Angela Lackey scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and Julie Brase added 11 points for Arizona.

The Golden Bears reduced a 14-point Arizona lead to 59-55 with 5:31 left, but the Wildcats scored 12 of the next 13 points, including 3-pointers by Monika Crank and Lisa Griffith.

Shavaki Jackson, benched while in foul trouble, led California (5-6, 0-1) with 14 points but ultimately fouled out.

California outshot Arizona from the field 47 percent to 37 percent overall but had 11 more turnovers than did the Wildcats.
