Post-Game Quotes

Arizona Head Coach Joan Bonvicini Quotes:

I was pleased with the better second half that we had tonight, but we need to play a whole lot better. We had a lot of open looks tonight and we didn't knock them down. We have to make our key shots and definitely play better if we want to beat Stanford on Saturday.

Angela Lackey played great for us tonight. She worked harder on the offensive glass tonight than I've seen her work all season long. But as a team, with as many offensive boards as we had tonight, we should have won by 20 or 25 points.

We missed a lot of our money shots tonight. Cal hung in there tonight, made a run at the end and we were strong enough to hold them off. Both our post players and our guards were careless tonight and everyone must pick up the intensity if we are going to beat Stanford on Saturday.

We won tonight because of our talent. We need more intensity if we want to meet the goals that this team has set for itself. It is a really good feeling to get that first conference win under our belts but this team needs to be a lot more focused next time out.

University of California head coach Marianne Stanley

On Shavaki Jackson
"She played very well tonight and was 7-of-8 from the field. She was the most consistent low post scorer for us. Her fouling out was not the difference in the game, but it definitely came at a critical time int he game.

"The free throws and turnovers were the difference tonight. We went to the line twice and they went 25 times. We had 27 turnovers, which is very uncharastic for us.

"Our kids just did not execute. In the first half, we were able to beat the press. We were not only beating the press, but we were getting a lot of good six or eight footers. The second half was completely different, like night and day. We know that we can beat the press, we just have to execute it."

Arizona Player Quotes

Angela Lackey

We didn't come out to play. I think we played harder in the second half but our intensity just wasn't up. I didn't expect us to play better because you play like you play in practice and it hasn't been great. We just need to pick it up in practice.

We will take any win we can get but we need to play well because in the tournament we are going to get beat if we don't play well.

Stanford is a big game. We have a sort of rivalry with them. We have to play hard and execute and we will win.

Tatum Brown

We have to play better. We took some shortcuts and we need to convert (Cal) turnovers to points. We have to execute the fundamentals. We didn't practice well and it showed.

We need to keep our poise and play hard. Slow the ball down when we need to. We need to practice harder. It was like there was a lid on the basket and the ball went in and out. We need to adjust our game and I think we did that in the second half.

I think Shavaki Jackson is a good player. Down in the post your performance better be good. Her ability didn't catch me off guard. I expected her to play well and she did.

Lisa Griffith

We had a long lay off. I think our last game was on Dec. 30 and that was a while ago. Our rust showed but we pulled it together in the second half.

When we play like we did tonight against quality teams we are going to lose. We need to be ready with intensity and we will have a better game on Saturday.

I am disappointed with how I played. I missed a lot of open jumpers. But you can't focus on that, you just need to move on. It is hard to simulate games in practice but we were ready to play in the Pac-10 and ready for Saturday.
