Cats Sign Phoenix Native Rogers to Scholarship

TUCSON, Ariz.-With few holes to fill on a deep, young team that advanced to the Sweet 16 of last year's NCAA Tournament, Arizona head volleyball coach Dave Rubio has signed just one player, middle blocker Lindsay Rogers out of Phoenix, to a scholarship to attend the University of Arizona beginning in the fall of 2000.

Rogers, a 6-foot-3 senior, helped lead Mesa Mountain View to the 5A state championship this past fall. Rogers plays for the Arizona Juniors volleyball club, just as current Wildcat and two-time All-Pac-10 selection Marisa DaLee did. According to Rubio, the similarities between the two athletes don't end there.

"We feel that Lindsay has similar potential at this stage to what Marisa DaLee had when we recruited her. She's an exceptional athlete. She has height, moves like a gazelle and jumps effortlessly. All she lacks is some formal volleyball training, which she's now receiving with Arizona Juniors. Realistically, it's going to be a couple of years until she can compete for a starting spot, and she'll likely red-shirt next season.

"We think she has a great deal of potential."

The Cats appear to be set at middle blocker in 2000 with DaLee, a senior, and 1999 honorable mention All-Pac-10 freshman selection Stefani Saragosa starting, and junior Erin Sebbas backing them up. Arizona, which finished 14th in the nation last season with a 21-11 mark, returns five starters next fall including a pair of All-District 8 players in DaLee and setter Dana Burkholder.
