Wildcats Travel to Southern California for NCAA Tourney
Arizona earned its 11th straight bid to the NCAA Tournament and will travel to Los Angeles for a four-team regional hosted by the University of Southern California. Rounding out the four-team field are Maryland-Baltimore County and UA's first-round opponent, New Mexico. The Wildcats hold a 7-11 all-time record in the championships and have advanced to the second round in eight of their 11 appearances. Arizona sophomore Lindsay Blau was selected to participate in the singles championships as well as in the doubles draw with junior Michelle Gough. Blau is one of 64 entrants in the singles field and is teaming up Gough in the 32-team doubles competition. For Blau, it is her second straight appearance in the doubles tourney. Last year she teamed up with former Wildcat Monique Allegre, though the duo was unable to advance past the first round as they fell to Tulsa's Jennifer DeSpain and Anousjka Van Exel, 6-4, 7-5. About New Mexico: The first round match will mark the second time this season that the 48th-ranked Lobos have faced Arizona. The squads squared off in the season opener at the UA Invitational, and the Wildcats came out on top, 7-2, in head coach Brad Dancer's first match at Arizona. UNM (15-11, 5-3 in MWC) is led by Ana Friganovic (23-19) who anchors a solid New Mexico lineup. For her efforts this season, Friganovic earned a berth in the singles championships. The Women of Troy: Twelfth-ranked USC (15-8, 4-4 in Pac-10) enters postseason play having dropped four out of its last six matches to close out the season. All four losses came at the hands of top-ranked Stanford and fifth-ranked California. Two of Southern California's 15 wins on the campaign came against Arizona. The Trojans cruised to a 9-0 victory in Tucson the first weekend of conference play and captured a 6-2 victory in the second match-up of the season at Marks Stadium. Freshman Jewel Peterson and senior Veronika Safarova were selected to compete in the singles tournament. The Women Troy lead the all-time series, 29-15, over the Wildcats and have won the last five meetings dating back to March 13, 1998. UA's last victory against USC was a 7-2 triumph on Jan. 30, 1998, in Tucson. Maryland-Baltimore County: UMBC (14-5) earned an automatic berth to postseason play by winning the Northeastern Conference tournament. Against the Tournament Field: Arizona compiled a 2-10 record against this year's tournament field. New Mexico (7-2) and Washington (7-2) account for UA's victories. USC (0-9, 2-6), Oregon (4-5), Arizona State (0-9, 1-8), California (1-8, 0-8), Texas (2-5), and Stanford (0-9, 1-7) round out the list of opponents in this year's tournament. Including Arizona, eight of the nine Pac-10 teams advanced to postseason play with Washington State the lone school not involved in this year's field of 64. Cats in the Polls: Three Wildcats earned a spot in the national rankings this season; freshman Uzma Khan, sophomore Lindsay Blau, and junior Michelle Gough. Blau and Gough were one of the top doubles teams in the country this year with three tournament victories and were a point away from the title at the National Indoor Championships. As a team, Arizona was ranked in 11 out of the 14 polls during the season.
