Women's Tennis Upset No. 6 UCLA
TUCSON, Ariz. - No. 31 Arizona upset No. 6 UCLA, 5-4, Friday at the Robson Tennis Center. The Wildcats captured two of the three doubles matches which proved to be the difference.
Going into doubles play, Arizona (4-0) split the singles matches with UCLA (2-1) logging victories at the first, third, and sixth spots. At the No. 1 position, junior Arizona's Michelle Gough defeated senior Amada Basica, 6-3,6-2. Sophomore Lindsay Blau outlasted UCLA's Elizabeth Schmidt, 7-6(2), 6-2. Wildcat junior Joanna Buczkowska notched a victory over sophomore Petya Marinova, 6-2,6-2.
Highlighting the doubles action, Arizona's team of Gough and Blau outlasted UCLA's duo of Basica and freshman Sara Walker, 8-5. At the No. 2 spot, UA's pair of freshman Uzma Khan and senior Vanessa Abel defeated the Bruins' duo of freshman Abigail Spears and Schmidt.
Arizona returns to action Saturday when they play host to USC at noon.
