Men's Swimming and Diving in Fifth Place After Day One at Pac-10 Championship

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - After the completion of the first day of competition at the 2000 Men's Pac-10 Swimming Championship today at the King County Aquatic Center the Arizona men's squad finds itself in fifth place, after accumulating 81 points. 18-time defending conference champion Stanford leads the competition with 209 points, followed by California (197), USC (180.5) and Arizona State (89).

Leading the way for the Cats was the three-time defending Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year, senior Ryk Neethling who captured his third-consecutive crown in the 500-yard free, in a time of 4:14.05. That title brought his career total to six Pac-10 individual titles to go along with his seven NCAA titles. Also scoring points in the 500-yard free was senior Nat Lewis, who finished sixth in time of 4:24.26.

The Cats also gained valuable points in the 200-yard medley relay, as the team of sophomore Roland Schoeman, senior Rob Henikman, senior Coley Stickels and junior Jay Schryver placed fourth (1:21.32).

Schoeman, the nation's fastest sprint freestyle swimmer also finished fourth in the 50-yard free, after clocking a time of 19.76.

Day two of the Pac-10 Championships begin tomorrow with the prelims beginning at 11:00 a.m. and the finals slated for 6:00 p.m.(PST).
