Men's Golfers In Eighth Place After Two Rounds of the NCAA Championships

Ricky Barnes Tied for Seventh and is Five Shots off the Lead

Opelika, Ala. (June 1) -- After shooting a 1-over-par 289 today in the second round of the 2000 NCAA Men's Golf Championships at the Grand National Lake Course (Par-72, 7,003 yards), the University of Arizona is in eighth place with a two-day total of 1-under 575. The Wildcats, who opened with a 286 yesterday, were the only Pac-10 Conference team to make the 15-team, 36-hole cut and trail first place Oklahoma State by 18 strokes heading into tomorrow's third round. The 15th team to advance will be decided in a playoff on Friday morning, featuring Georgia and Wake Forest.

OSU fired a 12-under par 276 today and is in first place at 18-under 557, owning a one shot lead over first round leader Texas. The Longhorns followed their total of 16-under 272 from yesterday with a 2-under 286 today to fall to second. Georgia Tech is five shots off the lead and in third place at 14-under 562, North Carolina is fourth (569) and Kent rounds out the top-five with a 5-under 571 total.

Individually, Oklahoma State's Charles Howell and Texas' David Gossett are tied for first place with a 36-hole total of 11-under-par 133. Gossett, who tied an NCAA record by shooting a 63 in yesterday's opening round, took a two stroke lead into today's action, but carded a 70 this afternoon to fall into the tie for first. Howell shot a 66 today after opening with a 67 yesterday. This pair owns a two shot advantage over East Tennessee State's Chris Wisler, who is at 9-under 135.

Arizona freshman Ricky Barnes is in a two-way tie for seventh and five shots off the lead at 6-under-par 138. He carded a 68 (35-34) today after shooting a 70 yesterday. Arizona's other freshman, Reid Hatley, is tied for 28th place at even-par 144. He shot a 74 after carding a 70 in the first round. Senior Derek Gillespie is tied for 62nd with a 2-over-par 146 (72-74), senior Scott Moore is tied for 111st with a 6-over 150 (77-73) and sophomore Cody Beyer is also tied for 111st with a 6-over 150 (74-76).
