Ricky Barnes Named Pac-10 Conference Freshman of the Year for Men's Golf

Tucson, Ariz. (May 5) -- Arizona's Ricky Barnes (Stockton, Calif.) was named the Pac-10 Conference Freshman of the Year in voting that was done by the league's head coaches. Currently ranked No. 19 in the country, he won two tournaments this season, the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate and the Louisiana Classic. Overall, Barnes has five top-10 finishes and leads the Wildcats with a stroke average of 71.33. He finished third at last week's Pac-10 Championships and has placed among the top-three in four of his last six outings.

Barnes was also an all-conference first team selection and was joined by UA senior Derek Gillespie (Oshawa, Ontario), who was named to the All-Pac-10 first team for the second time in his career. Gillespie was also named to the first team in his sophomore season (1998) and was a second team all conference pick in 1999 and 1997. Gillespie, ranked No. 18 this week, has six top-10 finishes this season and tied for seventh in the Pac-10 Championships.

Sophomore Cody Beyer (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon del Oro HS) was named to the All-Pac-10 honorable mention team. The No. 3 golfer for the 10th ranked Wildcats this season, he has a stroke average of 73.18 and has one top-10 and four top-20 finishes.

Arizona returns to action on May 13-14, at the Perry Maxwell Invitational in Ardmore, Okla.
