Texas Flavor Helps Football Team

Arizona's football recruiting in Texas -- specifically the Houston area -- over the past several years has paid dividends, never more evident than in the Cats' 27-3 victory over Stanford last week.

Running back Clarence Farmer of Houston's Booker T. Washington High School became the first true freshman running back to run for more than 100 yards at Arizona since Vance Johnson rushed for 183 yards against Fresno State in 1981.

True freshman center Reggie Sampay of Houston North Shore High School started and played in his first game, filling in for injured Bruce Wiggins, who also is from Houston. Sampay helped Arizona block the way for Farmer and helped solidify a line which did not allow a sack against quarterback Ortege Jenkins, who threw for 198 yards.

Senior defensive end idris Haroon of Houston Hastings High School earned Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Week honors. He had three tackles and a sack and returned a fumble 32 yards for a touchdown.

Starting field cornerback Michael Jolivette, a redshirt freshman and also of Houston North Shore, intercepted his second pass of the season and helped a secondary which kept Stanford out of the end zone and in its own half of the field most of the game.

Sophomore tight end James Hugo of The Woodlands, Texas, Oak Ridge High School, played considerably in Arizona's power sets and helped the Cats' men up front dominate the Stanford line.

Running back Leo Mills of Humble, Texas, has been one of the Cats' two top backs through three games and added 12 yards rushing including a nine-yard run for a first down.

Arizona also had redshirt freshman wide receiver Lance Relford (Houston Washington) and redshirt freshman quarterback Cliff Watkins (Breckenridge HS) in uniform at Stanford, and has two other Texans on the roster -- freshman offensive lineman Chris Johnson (Houston North Shore), freshman linebacker Patrick Howard (La Marque HS) and freshman running back Chris Harris of Elysian Fields High School.
