Wildcats Cruise Past Stanford, 27-3

  • Box Score

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Clarence Farmer ran for 130 yards and a touchdown, and Ortege Jenkins passed for 198 yards and another score as Arizona beat Stanford 27-3 on Saturday.

The Wildcats' three-back offense turned into a one-man show. Farmer, a freshman who had just 15 carries in Arizona's first three games, battered Stanford's defensive front on several long drives and scored early in the second quarter to help Arizona (3-1, 1-0 Pac-10) to an easy victory in its conference opener.

Jenkins completed 12 of 22 passes in his best start since taking over as Arizona's full-time starter after three years sharing time with Keith Smith.

Meanwhile, freshman quarterback Chris Lewis' first start for Stanford (2-2, 1-1) was a disaster as the defending Pac-10 champs lost for just the second time in 12 conference games.

Lewis rallied the Cardinal to a 27-24 upset of Texas two weeks ago when Randy Fasani suffered a knee injury, but Lewis was constantly harassed by defensive end Joe Tafoya and Arizona's defense, and he never led a long scoring drive.

He completed 14 of 32 passes for 177 yards and two interceptions.

Lewis threw three wild incompletions before Alex Luna intercepted his fourth pass of the game and returned it to the Stanford 22, setting up Sean Keel's 33-yard field goal.

Two minutes later, Jenkins hit Brad Brennan with a 36-yard TD pass, and Keel added another field goal late in the first.

Farmer scored on a 3-yard run early in the second, and both teams settled into a slow-moving game. Arizona's defense was dominant, while Farmer broke a 50-yard run in the third quarter and a 33-yard run late in the second quarter.

After Tafoya savagely sacked Lewis and caused a fumble early in the fourth quarter, Idris Haroon recovered and ran 32 yards to score. Haroon did a somersault into the end zone, and the Wildcats got both an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and a sideline warning.

Stanford got its only points on Mike Biselli's 30-yard field goal midway through the third quarter. The Cardinal managed just 103 yards rushing.

On a sweltering day at Stanford Stadium, the Wildcats avenged last year's 50-22 loss to the Cardinal in Tucson and gave the Cardinal their second home loss in three games this year.
