Livingston, 38, has previous Pac-10 experience as offensive line coach for three years at Washington State from 1995 to 1997. He has been running backs coach for the Aggies the past two years when the Aggies went to the Sugar Bowl and Alamo Bowl.

"Lawrence has a unique background which should benefit our program," Tomey said. "He coached the offensive line at Washington State when it had a Rose Bowl team, then did a good job at A&M, which is a fine program," he said. "We're fortunate to have him."

Livingston succeeds Brent Myers, who Tomey hired in January, but left to take a job at Washington in the middle of spring practice at UA, which ended April 10.

"I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to work with coach Tomey's staff. I look forward to working with tight ends and with coach (Charlie) Dickey on the overall offensive front. I'm glad to have had a few days of watching from the sidelines during spring ball, just to meet the staff and especially the players," Livingston said.

Livingston is an Arizona native, born in Showlow in 1961. He grew up in Riverside, Calif., and later earned a bachelor's degree from Weber State University in 1984. Livingston's uncle, Warren Livingston, was a star running back at Arizona from 1957-60, played six years of professional football for the Dallas Cowboys and was inducted into the Arizona Bank One Sports Hall of Fame in 1991.

"It's kind of neat. We knew about Lawrence's football coaching credentials, but then we found out he has some Arizona and Wildcat bloodlines," Tomey said.

He began his career as a graduate assistant to Mike Price at Weber State in 1983 and 1984, then was junior varsity coach at the school for three seasons before becoming an offensive line assistant at Army in 1988. He moved back to Weber State to coach the offensive line from 1989 to 1994 before joining Price's staff at Washington State for the 1995-97 seasons. Among his former pupils are NFL players Jason McEndoo and Scott Sanderson of WSU and Alfred PuPunu of Weber State.

As a center and offensive guard at Weber State, he is one of only a few in the school's history to start every game (44) of his career. He earned All-Big Sky honors as a junior and senior. As a coach, he's worked in four bowl games -- the 1999 Alamo and 1999 Sugar at Texas A&M, the 1998 Rose while at Washington State and the 1988 Sun Bowl for Army.

Livingston and his wife, the former Michelle Carter, have two sons, Theodore, 7, and Lawrence Jr., 8.
