Named to the 2000 USA Men's Select Team were: Shane Battier (Duke / Birmingham, Mich.); Cory Bradford (Illinois / Memphis, Tenn.); Nick Collison (Kansas / Iowa Falls, Iowa); Joseph Forte (North Carolina / Greenbelt, Md.); Casey Jacobsen (Stanford / Glendora, Calif.); Ken Johnson (Ohio State / Detroit, Mich.); Terence Morris (Maryland / Frederick, Md.); Troy Murphy (Notre Dame / Morristown, N.J.); Jason Richardson (Michigan State / Saginaw, Mich.); Jamal Tinsley (Iowa State / Brooklyn, N.Y.); Michael Wright (Arizona / Chicago, Ill.) and Jason Williams (Duke / Plainfield, N.J.).

"This team (Men's Select Team) has a great opportunity and a great challenge to help our Men's Senior National Team prepare for Sydney," said Holland. "We've had a tremendous response and great interest from players all over the country, and as a result, we've put together a very strong team. I really admire the commitment and sacrifice that these young men are making to play for USA Basketball."

Arriving in Maui on the evening of Aug. 27, the USA Men's Select Team will begin training on Aug. 28 with a 12:45 p.m. - 2:45 p.m. (all times local) practice session followed by another session that evening from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. The team will continue training on Aug. 29 and 30 with a scrimmage each day versus the USA Men's Senior National Team from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., media availability from 12:00 p.m. - 12:30 p.m. and a practice session from 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31 also features two practice sessions, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. The team will hold its final practice session on Friday, Sept. 1 from 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. then face the USA Basketball Men's Senior National Team on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. All practice sessions will be conducted at the Lahaina Civic Center and are closed to the public.

Joining USA Basketball as a head coach for the third time in his coaching career is St. John's head coach Jarvis. Jarvis guided the 1993 USA Basketball Men's 22 & Under Team to an 8-0 record and a gold medal at the FIBA Under 22 World Championship in Spain and led the East Team to a silver medal and a 2-2 record at the 1991 U.S. Olympic Festival. Most recently, Jarvis piloted St. John's to the 2000 Big East Tournament Championship and has led the Red Storm to the NCAA Tournament in each of his two years at the helm, including an NCAA Elite Eight appearance in 1999, his first year as head coach. Prior to arriving at St. John's, Jarvis spent eight seasons as the head coach at George Washington University (D.C.) (1991-98) and another five as head mentor at Boston University (Mass.) (1). All told, Jarvis has compiled a 306-158 (.659) career coaching record including eight NCAA Tournament appearances and three conference tournament championships.

"I'm thrilled to be representing my country again as well as coaching some of the top student- athletes in the country," said Jarvis. "Playing against the USA Basketball Men's Senior National Team, this group of collegians will be facing some of the best athletes in the world and I hope we can help them prepare for the Olympic Games in Sydney."

Joining Jarvis on the sidelines as the assistant coach of the USA squad is University of Cincinnati head mentor Huggins. Huggins will be serving his second coaching assignment with USA Basketball after assisting on the 1993 USA Men's World University Games Team that went 7-0 and won the gold medal in Buffalo, New York. In his 19 years as a college head coach, Huggins has amassed a sparkling 444-158 overall record (.738) and led his teams to 11 NCAA Tournaments. Taking over a program in 1990 that had not advanced to the NCAA Tournament since 1977, Huggins has guided the Cincinnati Bearcats to nine consecutive NCAA Tournaments (1), including two Elite Eight appearances (1993, 1996) and one Final Four appearance (1992), in his 11 years as head coach. Huggins also spent five years as the head coach at the University of Akron (1985-89) where he led the Zips to one NCAA Tournament and two NIT Tournaments. For his coaching efforts, Huggins has been named Conference USA Coach of the Year three times (1) and was tabbed 2000 National Coach of the Year by the Sporting News.

The 2000 USA Basketball Men's Select Team features seven players who have played on a combined 14 USA Basketball teams, including three members from this summer's USA Young Men's World Championship Qualifying Team.

Accounting for over half of the previously mentioned 14 teams are Collison and Jacobsen, who have each played on four USA squads. Collison most recently suited up for the USA this summer and finished as the second leading rebounder averaging 7.2 rpg. and adding 8.8 ppg. on the silver medal winning 2000 USA Basketball World Championship for Young Men Qualifying Team. He was also a member of the silver medal winning 1999 USA Men's Junior World Championship Team, the 1999 USA Men's Junior National Select Team and the gold medal winning 1998 USA Men's Junior World Championship Qualifying Team. Jacobsen joined Collison on the 1999 Junior World Championship Team and 1999 Men's Junior National Select Team and was also a member of the gold medal winning 1998 World Youth Games Team and the silver medal winning West Team at the 1998 USA Basketball Youth Development Festival.

Two other USA team members, Williams and Richardson, joined Collison this past July on the USA Young Men's Team. Williams, who also teamed up with Collison and Jacobsen on the 1999 USA Junior National Select Team, led the USA Young Men's squad in scoring (20.2 ppg.) and assists (5.8 apg.), while Richardson contributed a team second best 15.6 ppg. and 5.2 rpg. Arizona's Wright is also featured on multiple USA rosters having played on the silver medal winning 1999 USA Men's Junior World Championship Team and the 1998 gold medal winning USA Men's Junior World Championship Qualifying Team. Rounding out the list of team members with prior USA experience are Shane Battier, who played on the 1997 USA Basketball Men's Junior National Select Team, and Cory Bradford, who was a member of the gold medal winning 1999 USA Men's World University Games Team.

Highlighting the 12 man roster is Big East Conference Player of the Year and U.S. Basketball Writer's Association first team All-America selection Troy Murphy. Also receiving All-America accolades is consensus second team All-American and and NABC National Co-Defensive Player of the Year Battier. Other players earning individual honors are Atlantic Coast Conference Freshmen of the Year Forte, ACC Tournament MVP Williams, Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Year Tinsley and Pacific 10 Conference co-Freshman of the Year Jacobsen. Additionally, Johnson was honored by the Big Ten as its Defensive Player of the Year.

Of the 12 USA team members, 11 received all-conference recognition including four from the ACC: Battier (first team); Forte (second team); Morris (second team) and Williams (third team). Receiving All-Big Ten second team honors were Bradford and Johnson. All-conference first team honorees from the Pac-10 include Jacobsen and Wright, while Collison (honorable mention) and Tinsley (second team) both earned Big 12 All-Conference honors. Rounding out the all-conference honorees is Murphy who was named to the Big East's first team.
