Jason Gardner Named National Freshman of the Year

Tucson, Ariz. University of Arizona freshman point guard Jason Gardner has been named the United States Basketball Writer's Association National Freshman of the Year.

Heading into this afternoon's final regular season game against California, the freshman from Indianapolis, Ind., is averaging 12.9 points, 5.0 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game for the 25-6 Wildcats, 14-3 in the Pac-10 and tied for first. He is also averaging a team-high 36.8 minutes per game and has scored in double figures 23 times this year with a career-high 25 points coming at USC on Jan. 22.

In addition the USBWA honor, he was also named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 15 second team earlier this week.
