Player Quotes
February 28, 2000
Redshirt freshman Luke Walton:
"With the way we run our offense, the wings have a lot of chances to get
the assists."
"From the beginning of the year, we started with one of the deepest teams
in the country. If one guy goes down, then someone else steps up. If we win
our last four games and the Pac 10 title, we should get the number 1 seed
in the West and that's what we want. Winning the Pac 10 title is really a
big deal to us. At Stanford last year, we heard them celebrating when they
clinched it. That has been our first goal all season."
"You're always focused. It was harder to stay focused not knowing when you
are going to be in the game."
On the upcoming games against the Oregon schools:
"They are going to be huge games. Both Oregon and Oregon State are tough
places to play. On their home courts, with their crowds behind them, they
are going to be tough games. They have a lot of talent, they have good
athletes."
On Richard Jefferson returning:
"It gives us more explosiveness offensively and defensively."
Sophomore Richard Jefferson:
"I was out for six or seven weeks, I want to play basketball again. The
team has been taking care of everything they need to. They beat Stanford
without me, they avenged their only Pac 10 loss without me. God has blessed
me with a good body, I think my conditioning will help me return quicker
than some people think. When your game is based on explosiveness, that is
what you are going to go out there to do. You don't get this far without
realizing how lucky you are. I'm really looking forward to getting out there."
"To say you have tied for the best record ever in the Pac 10 even with all
the stuff that has happened, that just says how good of a coach Coach Olson
is. He should be a leading candidate for national coach of the year. There
are a lot of teams with a lot of talent. But to be in the position where we
are, it's more than just talent. There are definitely no surprises when we
play anyone. That's the coaches."
"We want to win these two games so we can have that showdown with Stanford
for the Pac-10 title. We have proven we can win no matter who is out there."
Freshman Jason Gardner:
On the upcoming games against the Oregon schools:
"We want to keep it (momentum) going just like they want to keep it going.
I think they are going to have huge crowds. They think they can win. I've
played in so many different places on the road now that it's not a big
difference. Everybody talks about getting back to the Final Four because it
is in Indianapolis, but we can't think about that. We've got two big road
games and then two big home games."
"I think Gilbert is more of a scorer. He's a scorer on this team. He's
starting to see what kind of a player he can be. He's maturing."
On Richard Jefferson's return:
"I think that gives us more rest. He brings a lot to this team. Bringing
Richard back gives us a lot of offense and at 6'7" he brings a lot of
defense."
On all that has happened this year:
"It has been bringing us closer together."
On Oregon losing A.D. Smith:
"That is not going to do anything but make others step up and fill his shoes."
