Head Coach Lute Olson Quotes
Pre Oregon State/Oregon
On the Arizona State game:
"Looking back on the ASU game we had some turnovers in key stretches that
hurt us in terms of letting them back in the game. Also one of the things
that we have done real well this year is shoot free throws and in one
stretch we struggled at the line which allowed them to stay in the game."
"When you have the kind of lead we had on Saturday guys tend to relax
mentally which comes from being a young team. Hopefully we will learn
something from that, Saturday is an example of not finishing the game like
we should have."
"Defensively we have to do a lot better job at controlling the dribbler and
our inside guys have to do a much, much better job at keeping the ball out
of the lane area. That will be the focus of our practice situations the
next three days."
On Richard Jefferson:
"Richard (Jefferson) had an x-ray this morning and was cleared for full
practice with no restrictions and he will go as full as his condition will
allow him to. We will get three workouts with him this week and see how
much he can help us on this trip. I saw him struggle last week with his
breathing so I expect four minutes at a time with him would be about
maximum, but we will know better by Wednesday."
"Just the fact that we will have another player we can go to for somebody
to be able to get a breather will help us, or if we do get in foul trouble
we will have more flexibility. The fact that Richard was someone prior to
the injury we used at both the two and three positions will also help us,
we will just have to see how he's able to move defensively."
"Richard has worked very hard at getting back, Ed Orr has had to hold him
back from doing too much before he was cleared. He has been riding the
bike, working on the EFX machine and lifting. He is trying to build up his
endurance but there isn't anything that can get you in shape for basketball
except for basketball, it's a very demanding game from a conditioning
standpoint."
On Luke Walton:
"Luke (Walton) has stepped his game up defensively and he may be the guy
that we have defend the two man, if we have to rest Gilbert (Arenas) or
Jason (Gardner). Even though he doesn't look like he has the ability to do
that, the combination of his awareness of the importance of positioning on
the court and his size have allowed him to be successful. We have not had
any problems what so ever on the perimeter of switching one, two and three
with Luke in there. He also has the ability to make switches on defense and
hasn't been burned because of the condition he is in. Luke is doing a great
job and he will be in the starting line-up until somebody can move him out
of there. It's obvious that we need both Richard and Luke in our line-up."
On Justin Wessel:
"Justin (Wessel) played really well for us on Saturday, he had eight
rebounds, he was three for five from field and he didn't get a lot of shots
off but was productive and was actually our best inside defender. I have
said it many times, if you have good competitors, competitors will compete
and in some games Justin hasn't had a lot of time but he is looking at this
as an opportunity to step his game up and be a factor and he has done that
very well."
On Oregon State:
"We always know when we play at Oregon State it will be a full house but we
would be disappointed if that wasn't the case, we play better when it's
noisy and loud."
