Javtokas Will Return to Lithuania
University of Arizona head coach Lute Olson announced today that freshman center Robertas Javtokas has returned to his native country of Lithuania, where he will play professional basketball. Javtokas came to the United States from Siauliai, Lithuania, prior to his junior year of high school (1997-98) and signed with the Wildcat basketball program last June.
Javtokas had played in eight of the Wildcats' 11 games this season and averaged 6.9 minutes per game. He scored six points to go with 10 rebounds and he was 3-of-8 from the field (.375).
"Robertas will not be with us, and he will be heading back to Lithuania," Olson said. "He has been offered a contract with the Division I league the top level league out there. I think some of this comes from the frustration with his classes and the language barrier he has encountered. He feels that it would be just easier to head back and play professionally. This will be effective immediately."
The fourth-ranked Arizona Wildcats (9-2) return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 28, against UNC-Wilmington in the opening round of the Bank One Fiesta Bowl Classic. Tip-off is set for 7:37 p.m. in McKale Center. The first game of the night pits Alabama against Delaware, beginning at 5:15 p.m.
