TUCSON--No. 2-ranked Arizona lived up to its billing with a 8-0 victory over sixth-seeded Middle Tennessee State in first-round NCAA Region 2 softball action at its own Hillenbrand Stadium Thursday.
UA pitcher Becky Lemke(28-5) pitched a no-hitter, struck out 11, and the Cats made the most of 10 hits and a couple of miscues by the Lady Raiders (39-20).
Arizona (54-7) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Lauren Bauer led off with a single, moved to second on a balk by MTSU pitcher Jennifer Martinez. Nicole Giordano reached on an error, then UA pulled a double steal. Toni Mascarenas' sacrifice fly drove in Bauer.
The Cats added four more in the second on an RBI single by Chrissy Gil, a fielding error, consecutive doubles by Bauer and Giordano and a triple by Mascarenas.
Katie Swan's double in the bottom of the sixth drove in two runs to end the game on the mercy rule.
UA, the region's top seed, meets the fourth seed, Massachussetts, at 5 p.m. Friday in second-round action. The Minutewomen, 35-22, dropped a 10-0 decision to South Carolina in the opening game of the regional. MTSU will meet Illinois State in an elimination game at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
