No. 3 Arizona Beats Saint Peter's, 10-0 (other games stories below)

Game 10

    TUCSON--Becky Lemke threw a one-hitter and a pinch single by Erika Hansen kick-started a five-run rally in the fifth as the No. 3-ranked Wildcats beat Saint Peter's 10-0 in the Hillenbrand Invitational softball tournament Saturday afternoon.

Lemke struck out eight and improved her record to 13-1 in the six inning game.

With the game scoreless, Hansen open the UA fifth with a pinch-hit single up the middle, and three batters later Toni Mascarenas knocked a two-run double. Lindsey Collins later socked a three-run home run to left. The Penhens were hitless until Marsha Kelley doubled to right-center in the fourth.

Arizona batted around in both the fifth and in a five-run sixth, the latter keyed by Toni Mascarenas' two-run home run.

Arizona (23-1) next plays on Sunday against Indiana at 12 noon and Northwestern State at 2 p.m.

    TUCSON--A no-hitter by Krystal Draper and home runs by Tarrah Beyster and Shawna Feldt emphasized Oregon State's superiority in its 13-0 victory over winless Saint Peter's (0-5) Saturday night in the Hillenbrand Invitational softball tournament.

Oregon State (16-4-1) jumped out early, with a two-run single by Beyster and a sacrifice fly by Feldt in the top of the first for a 3-0 lead. Then Feldt knocked a two-run blast and Beyster socked a three-run shot in the five-run second. Beyster added a two-run homer in the fourth, her seventh of the year.

Draper (7-0) missed a perfect game when her wild pitch on a strikeout allowed Hilary Stockwell to reach base in the third. She struck out seven.


Game 13

    TUCSON--Pitcher Krystel Markwardt scattered six hits to help lead Tulsa to a 4-3 victory over Northwestern in game 13 of Arizona's Hillenbrand Invitational softball tournament Saturday night.

The Golden Hurricane took a quick lead when Jessie Smith doubled to lead off the game, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Dawn Reed's single. Markwardt homered to left to give UT a 3-0 edge.

The Wildcats scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh on a single by Tami Jones, but reliever Jenny Magill got Erin Jancic to line out to end the game.


Game 12

    TUCSON--Northwestern State improved to 3-1 in the Hillenbrand Invitational softball tournament with a tough 5-3 victory over Northwestern Saturday afternoon.

The Demons scored twice in the first on an RBI single by Erin Mancuso and a run-scoring double by Brandy Kenney. Linette Stuart drove in another run in the second with a base hit, then NWSU picked up two more runs in the third on hits on an extended wild-pitch play.

The Wildcats had RBIs by Tami Jones, Erin Jancic and Brett Nakabayashi. Northwestern (6-8) dropped to 1-2 in tourney play and was to face Tulsa in the following game.


Game 11

    TUCSON--Northwestern State's Amanda Ortego threw a three-hit shutout to help pace the Demons to a 7-3 victory over Indiana in game 11 of Arizona's Hillenbrand Invitational softball tournament.

Hoosiers pitcher Teresa Martinez hit a two-run single in the top of the first to give Indiana a quick lead, but NWSU's Erin Palomarez clubbed a two-run home run to tie the game in the bottom of the frame.

Each team picked up a run in the second but NWSU took the lead in the third with an RBI single by Erin Mancuso.

NWSU improved to 13-8. Indiana dropped to 2-7. The Demons are 2-1 in tourney play, while Indiana fell to 1-3.


Game 9

    TUCSON--Oregon State's Tarrah Beyster checked Tulsa with a one-hitter and the Beavers accumulated 12 hits en route to a 12-0 victory in game 9 of the Hillenbrand Invitational softball tournment.

OSU scored twice in the first on an RBI single by Beyster and a fielder's choice, then broke the game open with an eight-run third highlighted by a two-run double by Parisa Plant and a two-run single by Shawna Feldt.

OSU (15-4) moved to 3-0 in the tournament while Tulsa (7-14) dropped to 1-2.

Kari Curtis' first-inning single was the only hit off Beyster, who struck out four in the mercy-rule shortened game.


Game 8

    TUCSON--Hoosier pitcher Jen Smith tossed a two-hit shutout in six innings as Indiana beat Saint Peter's, 9-0, in game 8 of the Hillenbrand Invitational softball tournament.

IU rightfielder Monica Zahasky hit a two-run triple to open the Hoosiers' scoring in the second inning, then a few minutes later Brooke Monroe cleared the bases with a double to left-center to make it 5-0.

Indiana (2-6) closed the game out with a four-run sixth, capped by Monroe's two-run single.

Hoosier pitcher Jen Smith (1-0) earned the victory. Lauren Anderson (0-1) took the loss for the SPC Peahens (0-3).

    Game 7:
    TUCSON--Arizona capped the first day of its Hillenbrand Invitational softball tournament with its 21st consecutive victory in an 8-0 win over Northwestern (6-8). UA opened play with a 10-0 blanking of Tulsa. Jennie Finch ended the game with a leadoff home run in the fifth for the eight-run mercy rule margin.

Lindsey Collins' two-run single in the third stretched UA's lead to 3-0 and Toni Mascarenas' hit a grand slam in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

Finch earned her 10th victory of the season with a two-hit performance. She gave up singles to Brett Nakabayashi and Jenn Shull.

Arizona plays one game in the tournament on Saturday, at noon against Saint Peter's College. Seven games are scheduled at two-hur intervals starting at 8 a.m.


Game 6

    TUCSON--In its first game of the Hillenbrand Invitational, Arizona knocked 11 hits -- six for extra bases, to support Becky Lemke's two-hit pitching in a 10-0 victory against Tulsa (7-14).

UA scored in the first on an RBI single by Toni Mascarenas, twice in the second on a double steal play and an RBI single by Nicole Giordano and three times in the third on a run-scoring double by Lindsey Collins followed by a Chrissy Gil triple and a double by Allison Andrade.

Mascarenas was three-for-three including a double to help set up UA's four-run fourth inning. Collins hit a two-run home run to cap the rally.

Tulsa's Jessie Reed and Dawn Reed had singles for the Golden Hurricane in the first, but Lemke (12-1) retired the last 13 batters. She struck out eight.


Game 5:

    TUCSON--Oregon State won a closely contested game, 1-0, over Indiana in game 5 of the Hillenbrand Invitational softball tournament.

The Beavers scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Shannon Sorg, then reliever Tarrah Beyster earned the victory with three innings of two-hit pitching.

The Hoosiers threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Lauren Hendrix reached on an error and was sacrificed to second. But Beyster (9-4) struck out the final two batters to end the game.


Game 4:

    TUCSON--Erin Palomarez, a graduate of Tucson Sunnyside High School, hit a lead-off home run to spark Northwestern State of Natchitoches, La., to an eight-run rally in the top of the third for all its scoring in an 8-2 victory over Saint Peter's College in game 4 of the Hillenberand Invitational.

Linette Stuart had a two-run single among six hits in the inning, but two Peahens errors also hurt SPC, allowing three unearned runs to score.

NWSU (12-8) evened its tourney record to 1-1 while SPC (0-2) dropped to 0-2.


Game 3

    TUCSON-Oregon State scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to edge Northwestern State, 2-1, in game 3 of the Hillenbrand Invitational softball tournament at the University of Arizona's Hillenbrand Stadium.

OSU's Tarrah Beyster (8-4) and NWSU's Christina Edgar (4-4) each pitched four-hitters.

Erin Mancuso hit an RBI double for NWSU to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth. But in the bottom of the frame, a fielding error by shorstop Amanda Ortego allowed Shawna Feldt to score from second.

OSU improved to 14-4-1 and NWSU fell to 11-6.


Game 2

    TUCSON--Ann Mesman's double to left scored pinch-runner Kari Curtis from second to give Tulsa a 1-0 eight-inning victory over Indiana in gamme 2 of the Hillenbrand Invitational softball tournament Friday.

Angela Wedlake led off th Golden Hurricane eighth with a single, then Curtis pinch ran and stole second to set up the score.

Wedlake (4-4) struck out 11 and walked one in a four-hit pitching effort for the Hurricane (7-13). Teresa Martinez (0-3) took the loss for Indiana (1-5), despite four-hit pitching.


Game 1

    TUCSON--Lauren Schwendimann struck out 13 and pitched a two-hitter to help lead Northwestern (6-7) to a 4-0 victory over Saint Peter's (0-1) in game 1 of Arizona's Hillenbrand Invitational softball tournament.

Robyn Pettinger tripled to right field in the second after a Gretchen Barnes' single to put Northwestern up 1-0.

The Wildcats scored in the fifth on Mikie Chambers' RBI single after Rane Gunderson singled and stole second and third. An RBI triple by Erin Jancic and a run-scoring single by Gretchen Barnes added two more runs in the sixth.

Lauren Anderson took the loss for SPC, in its season opener.
