Cats Squeak Past NAIA Softball Champions

TUCSON--No. 4-ranked Arizona (14-1) edged Simon Fraser University of Burnaby, B.C. the defending NAIA Champions, 2-1 in softball Wednesday.

The Cats managed seven hits off SFU pitcher Kathy Iggulden after pounding five NCAA Division I teams in one of their own tournaments last weekend by a combined score of 55-1.

The winning run scored in the UA fifth. Shortstop Allison Andrade led off with a double down the left field line, moved to third on a bunt single by Erika Hanson and scored on Nicole Giordano's slap grounder to second.

SFU, which collected only three hits off winner Jennie Finch (6-0), scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Juli Bodenbender.

Arizona travels to Tuscaloosa for the 'Bama Bash Tournament this weekend.
