Cats Beat No. 3 Fresno State, UNLV in Softball

Softball team 6-0 in ASU's Tourney.

PHOENIX -Becky Lemke (5-1) led No. 4 Arizona to a 3-0 victory over No. 3 Fresno State with a three-hitter Sunday, then teammate Jennie Finch (3-0) pitched a perfect game for four innings and no-hit the Nevada-Las Vegas Rebels for five and two-thirds innings to lead Arizona to a 10-1 victory to give UA a perfect 6-0 mark in the Fiesta Bowl Tournament.

Finch hit a solo home run to boost UA's lead to 2-0 in the game against FSU, then added a two-run blast to finish the UNLV game in the bottom of the sixth because of the eight-run mercy rule. UNLV hit two infield singles in the top of the sixth and scored a run on a throwing error by UA catcher Lindsey Collins.

Arizona improved to 8-1 on the season in dropping the Bulldogs to 4-1 and UNLV to 4-3.

The Wildcats had 14 hits in the UNLV game including three each by Lauren Bauer and Lindsey Collins. It was tighter in the first game as UA managed only Finch's solo home run and a single off loser Kristen Hunter (2-1) and Chrissy Gil's leadoff double in the seventh off All-American Amanda Scott. Gil stole third and scored on a throwing error for UA's final run.

In its six games of the tournament the Wildcats had 61 hits for a team .394 average, outscoring the opposition 46-4. Third baseman Toni Mascarenas was 10-for-20. Bauer had a team-high eight RBI. Lemke was 4-0 and allowed three earned runs in four appearances covering 26 innings. Finch allowed one earned run in her 12 innings of pitching, had seven RBI and a team-best .875 slugging percentage for the weekend.

The Cats showed speed, stealing 13 bases in 14 attempts in the six games, plus an ability to move runners, with six sacrifice hits and five sacrifice flies.

Arizona next plays host to Penn State, Tennessee Tech, New Mexico, Kentucky and Oklahoma in the Cats' Wildcat Softball Classic Friday through Sunday -- 15 games in all with the Wildcats playing two games each (3 and 5 p.m.) the first two days, and one game (1 p.m.) the final day.
