Wildcats Overpower Two in Fiesta Bowl Softball
PHOENIX--University of Arizona pitchers Becky Lemke and Jennie Finch each threw one- hitters and the Wildcats backed up those performances with 23 hits in a pair of 9-0 and 10-0 shutouts over Texas A&M and Tennessee-Chattanooga Saturday in Arizona State's Fiesta Bowl Softball Tournament.
In morning action at ASU's Farrington Stadium in Tempe, Lemke (4-1) missed a perfect game when Aggies catcher Selena Collins doubled off the right field fence. In seven innings she struck out four and walked none. A&M hitters (2-2) grounded out 15 times.
UA scored the only run it needed in the first when Nicole Giordano led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Lindsey Collins. The Cats sent 10 hitters to the plate in a five-run seventh.
In evening action at Rose Mofford Sports Center in Phoenix, Arizona had eight consecutive singles, then Toni Mascarenas hit a three-run home run to cap a seven-run second inning in the victory over Tennessee-Chattanooga.
Finch (2-0) allowed only a chop single and another UTC runner to reach base on a passed ball after striking out in the 10-0 game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule. UA had 12 hits in the game.
In action Friday, Lemke threw a a pair of three-hitters to give UA victories over Georgia and No. 18 South Carolina. Against the Bulldogs, Lauren Bauer's grand slam punctuated the Cats' 11-1 victory. Later Friday afternoon, designated player Finch singled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh against South Carolina in a close 3-2 ball game.
No. 4 Arizona (6-1) has a showdown with No. 3 Fresno State at 10 a.m. and a final game against Nevada-Las Vegas at 12 noon on Sunday in action at the Mofford fields.
