Oregon State's Davis, Nicholson Slam Arizona In 10-4 Pacific-10 Baseball Victory

  • Box Score

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State took the lead for good on a grand slam by Curtis Davis in the bottom of the second inning as the Beavers beat Arizona 10-4 in Pacific-10 baseball Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Scott Nicholson scattered 11 hits in pitching his third straight complete game for OSU (20-17 overall, 3-5 Pacific-10), which clinched its first series victory of the conference season with the win.

The Beavers, who won Friday's opener 6-3, and the Wildcats (20-23, 5-9) conclude their weekend series Sunday at 1 p.m. The game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

Saturday's game marked the second straight day that OSU used a grand slam to deny Arizona a comeback win. On Friday, Brian Barden's blast in the seventh inning had secured Oregon State's win; in both games, the grand slams came not long after the Wildcats had taken a lead over the Beavers.

"We don't get down after we lose a lead," Davis said. "We stay in it and we've been able to score some runs."

OSU has won three straight games and four of its last five dating back to the middle game of last weekend's series at fourth-ranked Arizona State. At ASU, the Beavers' two losses were both by one run.

"We showed signs we could be a good club," said Davis, who has three home runs this week after hitting two at Portland on Tuesday. "Things are going good for us right now, and we've just got to keep grinding them out."

On Saturday, OSU had taken a 2-0 lead in the first inning only to see Arizona jump in front 3-2 in the top of the second. The Beavers came back to load the bases with two out against Wildcat lefthander Tony Milo when Davis came to the plate.

"He threw me a curve on the first pitch" for a ball, Davis said. "With the bases loaded, I just wanted to drive in some runs. Then he gave me a fastball up, and I took it out."

Davis deposited the ball in almost the same spot behind left-centerfield that Barden's homer had landed Friday, putting Oregon State ahead 6-3. The Beavers then added a run on a bases-loaded walk to Drew Hedges in the fourth inning by reliever Mike Crawford to make it 7-3.

Oregon State tacked on three more runs with two out in the sixth inning against Crawford and Rob Elias on run-scoring singles by Hedges and Eric Stark and an RBI double by Bryan Ingram. That was plenty for Nicholson, who battled his way through a rough second inning before improving his record to 6-4 this season.

"I was really happy with Scott," OSU head coach Pat Casey said. "He wasn't sharp the first couple innings, but he stayed with it and made adjustments and got back into a groove. He went out and competed, and he gave us the opportunity to come in every inning without any runs on the board for Arizona."

The Wildcats got their leadoff batter on base in all but two innings against Nicholson, but could only manage a run-scoring single by Ryan O'Donnell and a two-run single by Troy Gingrich in the second inning and a solo homer by Erik Torres in the eighth. Nicholson walked three and struck out seven as he gave the Beavers back-to-back complete games on the heels of Thad Johnson's seven-hitter Friday.

"They throw strikes and make teams put the ball in play, and that's got a lot to do with it," said Davis, whose designated hitter role allowed him to study both teammates' work from the dugout. "They're good pitchers, and they're fun to watch. Every time we go out there, we have a chance to win."

Stark was 3-for-5 for the Beavers, while Josh Carter was 2-for-3 with a double, Ingram was 2-for-5 with a double and Gerber and Will Hudson were both 2-for-4. For Arizona, O'Donnell was 3-for-4 with a double, Torres was 3-for-5 with a double and a homer and Gingrich was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

OSU put its leadoff batter on base in seven of eight innings and brought him around to score four of those times, but the Beavers left 14 runners on base. Oregon State outhit the Wildcats 15-11 and the Beavers took advantage of 10 walks and one hit batter by Arizona pitchers.
