Diggins Honored by Collegiate Baseball; Cats Return to Baseball America Top 25
TUCSON, Ariz.Arizona sophomore Ben Diggins has been named National Co-Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball following his accomplishments both on the mound and at the plate in the Cats' three-game sweep of Tulane. That sweep has also propelled the Cats back into Baseball America's Top 25.
Diggins led Arizona to a 4-3 victory on Friday, Feb. 25, in the series opener. The 6-foot-6 right-hander pitched his second consecutive complete game, striking out a career-high 13 batters while allowing just two earned runs. He is the first Wildcat pitcher since Ryan Frace in 1995 to throw back-to-back complete games.
In the final two games of the series, Feb. 26 and 27, Diggins did his damage as the designated hitter, going 6-for-7 with two home runs and seven runs batted in. He reached base nine times in 10 plate appearances and posted a 1.714 slugging percentage. In Saturday's game, Diggins recorded his first two-homer game and his first four-hit performance.
For the season, Diggins is 4-0 on the mound in six starts with a 2.16 earned-run average. He has struck out 46 batters in 41.2 innings and is holding opponents to a .304 slugging percentage. At the plate, Diggins is batting .484-5-18 with a 1.000 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .579.
