Byer Limits Wildcats to Three Runs in Gaels Victory

TUCSON, Ariz.-- Sophomore left-hander Mike Byer scattered three runs (two earned) on seven hits in six innings of work as St. Mary's outlasted No. 19 Arizona, 4-3, Saturday at Sancet Field.

Byer (1-0) shut out the Wildcats for three innings before allowing single runs in the fourth through sixth innings.

St. Mary's (1-1) struck first in the top of the first inning with one out when freshman second baseman Mark Teahan singled to center field followed by a two-run homer by senior left fielder Tom Nichols off of senior right-hander Mike Crawford.

Teahan lead St. Mary's with four hits and scored two runs.

Crawford (0-1) picked up the loss surrendering three runs and seven hits. He struck out seven without walking a batter over five innings of work.

Senior center fielder Troy Gingrich and junior third baseman Erik Torres led the Wildcats with three hits apiece. Gingrich had a career-high three steals, and Torres got Arizona on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo homer.

The two teams will meet again Sunday at 1 p.m.
