Chaplin Finishes 15th in NCAA 5,000m
Boise, Idaho (June 5) - The University of Arizona track and field team finished competition at the 1999 NCAA Outdoor Championships Saturday at Bronco Stadium/Ed Jacoby Track. The Wildcats men finished 14th with 20 points, while the Arizona women were 66th with one point.
Arkansas won the mens title with 59 points, Stanford was second with 52, Southern Methodist was third with 49 and Auburn was fourth with 40. On the womens side, Texas claimed its second straight title with 62 points, edging UCLAs 60. USC finished third with 58 and Georgia was fourth with 37.
Arizona's lone competitor, freshman Tara Chaplin, finished 15th in the womens 5,000 meters in a time of 17:01.63. Villanova's Carrie Tolefson won the race in 16:09.51. Chaplin completed a very successful first season, running in five NCAA Championships races -- 98 Cross Country, 99 Indoor 3,000m and 5,000m and 99 Outdoor 5,000m and 10,000m. She also earned two All-America honors, the indoor 5,000m and the outdoor 10,000m. She was the first Arizona freshman to compete in five national championships events.
For the meet, Arizona earned nine All-America honors -- Abdi Abdirahman (5,000m and 10,000m), Chaplin (10,000m), Jeff Dutoit (pole vault), Maureen Griffin (hammer), Carolyn Jackson (400m), Esko Mikkola (javelin) and Patrick Nduwimana (800m). Nduwimana and Mikkola both turned in second place performances in the respective events. Abdirahman concluded his collegiate career as an eight-time All-American. The other athletes will return next season to compete for the Wildcats.
