ARIZONA FOOTBALL PRESS CONFERENCE
HEAD COACH DICK TOMEY QUOTES
OCTOBER 12, 1999

On UTEP:
"They've got some of the better players we'll play against. This is the best El Paso team I think I've seen since I've been playing them."

"He's (Paul Smith) an impressive guy. He's a big powerful guy, he's got good speed, and he's hard to bring down."

"Their quarterbacks are very impressive. They're both very similar. And, of course, last week (Jay) Stuckey was 12-for-13 throwing, which is awfully impressive."

"The scouts tell us he's (Brian Young) as good as anybody we'll play against."

Dennis Northcutt:
"It really helps us to have him do that (play wide receiver and cornerback). The other day will be the toughest he'll ever have it because of the heat and the time of day. But, he did some good things, and I think having him in there really helped us."

"With the dehydration, you get through that the next day. He realized that might happen, but he's feeling just fine."

"He's obviously going to be more principally an offensive player, but he can be a situational player on defense. It (playing both positions) can do nothing but help him."

Two-way players:
"We try to perpetuate that mindset, and we always have. If you can help your team and if someone has the versatility to do it, I've always believed it's something you need to try to do."

"We have three or four guys right now that can do it and help, and we're going to take advantage of that. Guys playing both ways is not a new concept with us."

"If we were concerned about injuries, you would never play the game. With the guys that we're asking to do more than one thing, they can all handle it."

Position flexibility:
"It's good for our team that guys are not all doing what their first choice is. Joe Tafoya is playing defensive tackle, and he wants to be a defensive end. But, where he's playing now helps our team immensely."

"With O.J. (Ortege Jenkins) and Keith (Smith), their first choice isn't running routes at wide receiver, but they're going to do it."

"We can't afford to have whoever is not playing standing on the sidelines. We are going to ask more guys to do more as time goes on."

"We talk about position flexibility early on. We try to establish a mindset early on that it's good to be unselfish, it's good to be flexible, and it's good to have position flexibility."
