PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES
MARCH 6, 2000

ARIZONA HEAD COACH LUTE OLSON QUOTES

On the final weekend of the regular season:
This is definitely a big week for us, and the good news is that, despite last weekend, we have a chance to get a share of the title. It is nice to have the opportunity on our home court, but we have our work cut out for us. We are capable of getting it done. Our crowd is going to be ready, and we will be ready.

A look back at the Oregon trip:
It was a very disappointing weekend from the standpoint of the losses. But, we have a team with three freshmen that has gone 6-3 in the league, and we have had every chance to win the three games. That is a compliment to them and to their competitiveness.

Jason (Gardner) had an unbelievable game against Oregon, and it just shows that he is a tremendous competitor.

In the Oregon game, we had good ball movement, and Luke Walton did a good job of getting the ball into Michael Wright. But, we did not do a good job of stopping the penetration consistently against Oregon. It was not a case of us not getting good looks. We just made some mistakes.

On the Stanford game:
Stanford really makes it tough for people at the three-point line. They have big guys inside to block shots, and they harass the guy on the perimeter once the guy catches the ball. Part of the reason they are so tough is that you can't really jam them in that easily.

The match ups with Stanford are going to be very interesting. The Michael Wright-Mark Madsen match up has always been a real war. Madsen is a tough inside defender, and Wright is a good face-up shooter, but both are capable of scoring well in the basket areas.

Luke (Walton) did a good job on (Casey) Jacobsen the last time around, and he is one of their guys who can really shoot the three. Both Luke Walton and Justin Wessel have done an excellent job of finding the guys inside, and they are both capable of hitting face-up shots.

We need Richard (Jefferson) to step up defensively this week, and we need him to be much more involved on that end.

Michael Wright:
We definitely need for his scoring to be up there with Loren's (Woods) absence, and he has a lot more room to work with now. Michael (Wright) can also turn and shoot the face up very well. With the rebounding, he is getting himself too far under the basket, and with us down low, it has to be Michael with his back to the basket. He has to be able to hold his ground.

Loren Woods:
We still don't know whether he will be available (this weekend). He is continuing with a rehab program, and we are still waiting for some (test) results to come back. It is not going to be anything we will know until the doctors know, and we will just have to prepare with the guys we have.
