University of Arizona head coach Lute Olson
Press Conference 1/25/00 - Pre-Arizona State

With facing ASU, they create a lot of problems.  They really are moving well without the ball.  They are getting good ball movement now, especially with the way Tanner Shell is coming on like he is.  They have nice balance, and Coach (Rob) Evans and his staff are utilizing their personnel very well.  The players are understanding the roles and are playing sound basketball.

The number one problem is obviously dealiing with (Eddie) House, but they are not a one-man team, despite the numbers he is putting up.  Shell is coming off the bench, and (Shawn) Redhage has been playing solid all year.  He seems to have a good understanding of the game.  (Awvee) Storey is a warrior, just non-stop on the offensive glass.  From the point guard spot, they are doing what they should be doing.  A number of their losses were close and could easily have been wins.  They are still undefeated at home.

The key is to try to slow Eddie House down, not stop him.  Our biggest thing becomes percentages.  If he has big numbers, but not big percentages, then we are probably going to be okay.  Gilbert (Arenas) will be the initial defender on him, but he is going to share the duties with Jason Gardner.

Ray Young at UCLA did a good job on him (House).  He really got into him.  Whenever House got the ball, Young was there and on him.  He is 6-2 or 6-3 and he has very long arms, so it looked like that really bothered House.  When you foul him (House), you may as well just give him the points because he is something like a 90 percent free throw shooter.

Regarding the reprimand (on Michael Wright) from the league, I completely agree with it, and it was called for.  It was not a part of play, and it is definitely not something that we condone.  It was a cheap shot.  During the course of the game, there was a lot of stuff going on, but this came after the fact.  Someone had rebounded the ball and got it out of there when it happened.

Michael needs to start steeping his shots out more.  He can face up to the basket well, but he is not always getting open and getting good looks.  We'll have to have him do a better job of what he needs to do in the context of the offense.

On Ricky Anderson and Luke Walton:
I think they are going to have a breakout game anytime now.  And once that happens, I don't think they are going to be guys who you can leave open.  Looking at the tapes, they had about 12 shots between then (against USC), and there was not one of them that I would have told them not to take.  I think that it is just a confidence thing and in their heads.  Ricky is a 75 percent free throw shooter, and Luke is about 72.  You can't make over 70 percent from the line and not be a good shooter.

Rob (Evans) is a class guy, a hardworking guy.  There was no question in my mind from the time that he got the job that he was going to get it done.  They are a sound team, and they play really hard.  They are working hard in recruiting.  Look at what he did at Mississippi.  That was a coaches' graveyard, and he turned it into a winning program.
