12-Run Sixth Leads Gauchos to 15-12 Win
TUCSON, Ariz.-UC Santa Barbara used a 12-run sixth inning to overcome an 8-0 deficit on its way to a 15-12 victory over Arizona in Tucson Saturday afternoon.
UCSB improved to 9-9 with the win, while the Cats fell to 14-12.
Thirteen consecutive Gauchos reached base in the sixth off four of the five Wildcat pitchers used that inning. UCSB collected 11 hits in the frame as well as two walks. Junior shortstop Jeff Bannon's three-run homer highlighted the inning. Bannon drove in five runs on three hits to lead the Gaucho attack.
Arizona was led at the plate by Ben Diggins, Shelley Duncan, Trevor Mote and Ryan O'Donnell, each of whom collected three hits. Duncan also drove in three runs.
Sophomore righty Jeremy Sugarman (1-1) earned the win with four innings of relief work. Senior right-hander Peter Dyball earned his first save by shutting down a ninth-inning Wildcat rally. Sophomore righty Rob Schulz (0-1) took the loss for the Cats.
The two teams will conclude their series Sunday at 1 p.m.
