Pemble, Meyer Shut Down Gaels Giving Stitt his 100th Career Victory

TUCSON, Ariz.Sophomore lefty Brian Pemble and senior right-hander Mike Meyer combined to limit Saint Mary's to two runs giving Wildcat head coach Jerry Stitt his 100th career victory, a 5-2 decision Sunday afternoon at Sancet Field.

Arizona improved to 2-1 with the victory, while Saint Mary's dropped to 1-2.

Stitt is 100-73 in his fourth season as the Cats' head coach. He joins J.F. "Pop" McKale, Frank Sancet and Jerry Kindall as the only Arizona coaches to win 100 games.

Pemble (1-0) allowed one run on four hits over 5.0 innings for the victory. Meyer earned his first save with 4.0 innings of work, striking out five while walking no one. Gaels senior right-hander Evan Rust (0-1) allowed five runs (four earned) on 10 hits over 4.1 innings and took the loss.

Four Wildcats led a balanced Arizona attack with two hits each. Sophomore right-hander Shelley Duncan drove in two, marking the 10th consecutive game over two seasons in which he has collected at least one RBI.

Sophomore shortstop Brett Wayne collected three hits for St. Mary's.

Arizona returns to action next Friday, Jan. 28, when the Cats open a three-game series with San Francisco at Sancet Field at 3 p.m.
