John Mackovic, former head coach of three different major universities and the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs, was named by University of Arizona athletics director Jim Livengood as the program's head football coach today. Mackovic, 57, becomes Arizona's 26th head coach and succeeds Dick Tomey, who resigned Nov. 24 after 14 years directing the program. Mackovic has been a college football analyst for ESPN since 1998. Senior defensive end Joe Tafoya was selected by teammates for the Damon Terrell Most Valuable Player award on December 3 in annual banquet ceremonies. Tafoya led the team with 18 tackles for loss and six sacks. He also knocked down four passes, recovered a fumble and forced two others. [continued]
