Wildcat Soccer Blanked in Home Opener
Cats fall to rival Sun Devils, 4-0
TUCSON, Ariz. -- After a nearly two-hour weather delay, the University of Arizona women's soccer team fell to rival Arizona State, 4-0, at home on Tuesday night.
The two teams played just four minutes of the first half before the contest was suspended due to inclement weather. After an hour-and-40-minute wait, the two teams took the field again and fought steady rain and sloppy field conditions throughout the remainder of the match.
ASU junior defender Karine Inoue set up the Sun Devils' first goal when her shot bounced off the cross bar, then was sent home by defender Jill Rivard at the 14:57 mark. Freshman forward Holly Cohen took advantage of a lapse in the Wildcat defense to score ASU's second goal barely 19 minutes into the match.
Sophomore midfielder Stacey Tullock notched the third goal for the Sun Devils just six minutes into the second half. Junior midfielder Antoinette Marjanovic capped the victory when UA goalkeeper Shannon Monti dropped Marjanovic's dead-on shot, and the ball rolled into the goal. Arizona State goalkeeper Erin Reinke earned the solo shutout.
Arizona State outshot the Wildcats, 21-14. UA junior forward Chrissy Sanford and sophomore midfielder Marisa Padula led the Cats with three shots apiece, while junior midfielder Brooke McManus and sophomore defender Erin Nelson had two shots each.
Arizona moves to 1-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in Pac-10 play, while ASU is now 1-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the Pac-10. Arizona remains at home for a contest on Sunday, Sept. 5, against New Mexico at 1 p.m.
