Neary, Gough Earn Academic All-District VIII First Team Honors

Glenn named to second team

Two University of Arizona student-athletes were named to the GTE Spring Women's At-Large Academic All-District VIII first team today, and another was on the second team, by vote of CoSIDA members.

Track and field junior Andrea Neary (Flagstaff, Ariz.) and tennis junior Michelle Gough (Johannesburg, South Africa) earned the first team honors, while track and field sophomore Brianna Glenn (La Mirada, Calif.) was tabbed to the second team. Arizona was one of two schools to have two athletes on the first team, Northern Arizona was the other.

Neary has been the track and field team's top pole vaulter throughout the season, setting a school record with a clearance of 13-1 (4.00m). Her mark, which is an NCAA automatic qualifier and No. 5 in Pacific-10 Conference history, came at the April 1 Jim Click Shootout. Neary has a 4.0 grade point average in physiological science and was recently named the 2000 Raytheon Woman Athlete of the Year.

Gough was a member of the Pac-10 doubles' championship team with teammate Lindsay Blau earlier this season. She was the No. 3 singles player on the team that finished the regular season ranked 22nd in the nation. She was ranked as high as 59th nationally in singles and her doubles team was in the top 10 the last six weeks of the regular season. Blau has a 3.95 GPA in mathematics.

Glenn finished third in three individual events (100m, 200m, long jump) at the Pac-10 Track and Field Championships last weekend in Eugene, Ore. During the season, she set the school 100m record three times, running a top time of 11.43 Saturday in the Pac-10 semifinals. She had a wind-aided best of 11.24 to win the Texas Relays earlier in the season. Glenn also set the school record in the long jump with a best of 21-2 (6.47m), as well. Glenn has a 3.69 GPA in marketing.

Student-athletes must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale to be eligible for Academic All-District honors. District VIII includes schools in the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawai'i, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and British Columbia. The District VIII winners will be on the national GTE Academic All-American ballot, which will be announced June 15.
