Wildcat Swimmers Stay Undefeated After Sweeping UC San Diego and NAU


TUCSON, Ariz. - The second-ranked Arizona women's swimming and diving team swam past UC San Diego (125-63) and Northern Arizona (224-67) today at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center, to move to 5-0 overall, 2-0 in the Pac-10, this season. Meanwhile the No. 4 men's squad recorded a 230-70 victory over the UC San Diego Tritons, to move to 3-0, 1-0 in the Pac-10.

While the meet featured the Arizona swimmers competing in their secondary events, several Cats produced strong performances. In the women's meet versus UC San Diego sophomore Jamie Krohn recorded victories in both the 100 back (59.42) and the 500 free (5:06.47). Also strong for the Wildcats was freshman Julie Manitt who swam to victory in the 200 IM (2:06.13) and notched second in the 100 back (59.90).

On the men's side freshman Jeff Dash was a double event winner (200 free: 1:43.50) and 100 fly: 50.47), while eight other Wildcats notched first-place finishes.

In the diving competition UA sophomore Ruben Vaca recorded a school record in the 1 Meter springboard competition (6 dive) with a score of 368.48. Vaca's score bettered Dale Caldwell's 1989 mark of 363.75.

The Wildcats next return to action when they travel to Austin, Texas to meet some of the finest athletes in the nation at the University of Texas Invitational, Dec. 3-5.
