3.23.2000 Arizona's Roland Schoeman Ties World Record in 50-Meter Freestyle MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - In the first session of action at the 2000 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships today at the University Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota, Arizona sophomore Roland Schoeman (Pretoria, South Africa) tied the world record in the 50-meter (short-course) freestyle. Shoeman's preliminary time of 21.31 matched Mark Foster's (Great Britain) 1998 mark. Schoeman's time was attained in a short-course format, which is being used for the first time in the 77-year history of NCAA men's swimming and diving. Short-course swimming utilizes a 25-meter pool in which the swimmers make one turn during the 50-meter freestyle race. This differs from the long-course format used at the Olympic Games in which the pool is 50 meters in length and the race requires no turns.
