Cats Win Softball Opener Behind Lemke's No-Hitter

  • Box Score

TUCSON--Arizona pitcher Becky Lemke threw a no-hitter and struck out a school-record 19 batters in the Wildcats' 2-0 victory in a doubleheader opener against Brigham Young Saturday.

Lemke missed a perfect game by hitting Lindsey Hodgen with a pitch to lead off the fourth inning. She struck out the side six times and got the other two batters on pop outs.

UA's Jennie Finch hit her 13th home run of the season to give UA a 1-0 lead in the fourth and the Cats added an insurance run in the fifth when Nicole Giordano reached on an error, was sacrificed to second, then stole third and scored when the catcher threw the ball into left field.

No. 2-ranked Arizona improved to 26-1. Lemke improved to 15-1. BYU (7-7) pitcher Meghann Pricer, a transfer who played at Arizona last year, took the loss and dropped to 4-4. She held the Cats to three hits.
