Cats Whip UCLA in Softball, 9-1
TUCSON Jennie Finch threw a two hitter and Arizona had little trouble generating its own offense in a 9-1 victory over No. 3 UCLA, shortened by the eight-run rule to five innings. Finch (24-2) allowed an infield single by Natasha Watley that bounced off Finch's ankle in the fourth, and a solo home run by Tairia Mims in the fifth.
No. 2-ranked Arizona improved to 50-7 overall and stayed a game behind Washington in Pac-10 play at 13-4. UCLA dropped to 39-10-1 and 11-6.
The Wildcats scored quickly for the first time this weekend. Lauren Bauer collected her seventh consecutive hit to lead off the first, and stole second. After a Nicole Giordano walk, a Katie Swan single and a sacrifice by Toni Mascarenas, Lindsey Collins homered to left.
Mascarenas' grand slam in the second scored four runs, all unearned, and helped chase UCLA starter Courtney Dale (7-3). UA added its last run on an RBI single by Giordano in the third.
The Pac-10 season concludes this week. Arizona travels to the Bay Area for a game Friday Cats at Stanford and a doubleheader Saturday at California.
The NCAA Softball Committee will select the 48 teams and eight regional sites for NCAA Championships play Sunday. Arizona is one of a number of teams which have bid to be a regional host for early rounds play May 19-21.
