Arizona Softball Defeats Oregon, 2-0
Eugene, Ore. The No. 17 Oregon softball team, bidding for their fifth consecutive conference win, fell short to No. 2 Arizona today at Howe Field, 2-0. The loss drops the Ducks' season record to 33-19, 5-7 in the Pac-10. Arizona improves to 46-7, 9-4.
The game was a pitcher's duel from the outset, as both starters allowed just three hits apiece for the game. Oregon starter Andrea Vidlund (16-5) pitched well all day, allowing the first run to score in the top of the third inning when the Wildcats got a leadoff single by Laura Bauer. After two sacrifices moved her to third, Toni Mascarenas drove her in with an RBI double down the right field line to put Arizona on top, 1-0.
The score would remain 1-0 until the top of the seventh, when the Wildcats had Chrissy Gil on second base with one out. Allison Andrade singled up the middle to drive in Gil and make the score 2-0, but was thrown out at second base trying to advance on a potential throw to the plate.
Oregon head coach Rick Gamez was disappointed with his team's performance at the plate. We can't beat the No. 2 team in the country by getting just two hits, he said. They are too good of a team to not take advantage of scoring opportunities and we didn't do that today. They did a good job of sacrificing to get runners in scoring position and they got the timely hit when they needed it. We just couldn't get the timely hit when we needed it today. I hope things will be different for us tomorrow.
