#2 Arizona Softball Defeats #4 Arizona State

Tempe, Ariz. - The fourth-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils (38-11, 6-6 Pac-10) fell to the second-ranked Arizona Wildcats (45-7, 8-4 Pac-10), 3-0, tonight at Farrington Stadium.

The game was pitcher's dual between ASU starter Kirsten Voak (26-5) and UA starter Becky Lemke (24-5) as the two teams combined to produce only seven hits.

With no outs in the first inning, Arizona State had chance to start the scoring after Missy Hixon reached on an error by second baseman Katie Swan and Nichole Thompson reached on an infield hit. But Lemke then struckout the next three ASU batters to end the early threat.

ASU had another chance to score in the fourth inning, with two on and no outs, Voak hit a hard ground ball to third baseman Toni Mascarenas, who then threw onto first to double up Voak.

To begin the fifth inning, UA catcher Lindsey Collins doubled to right field, then after Voak struckout Jennie Finch and got Chrissy Gil to fly out top left field, Allison Andrade single down the third base line to bring Collins home, breaking the scoreless tie.

Again with two outs, the Wildcats would put two more runs on the board in the seventh inning, off of a two-run home run from Gil.

The Sun Devils left six runners on base, while the Wildcats stranded two.

Lemke did walk four batters, but limited the Sun Devils to only three hits while striking out 10.

Arizona State will next travel to 18th-ranked Oregon on Friday, April 28 for a single game at 2:00 p.m., while Arizona will face 13th-ranked Oregon State in Corvallis.
