Arizona Tops Arizona State in Softball, 3-1
TUCSON--A four-hit pitching performance by Jennie Finch and solo home runs by Katie Swan and Toni Mascarenas in the bottom of the fifth inning helped lift Arizona to a 3-1 Pac-10 softball victory over Arizona State Tuesday night at Hillenbrand Stadium.
Arizona, 40-3, stayed unbeaten in league play at 4-0. ASU dropped to 34-7 and 2-2.
Finch struck out nine and outdueled ASU's ace, Kirsten Voak, to improve to 19-0 on the season. Voak, last week's Pac-10 pitcher of the week, dropped to 23-3. She allowed seven hits and struck out five.
Kara Brun's fifth home run of the year, a solo shot to left with one out in the second inning, staked ASU to a 1-0 lead.
Arizona tied the game two innings later. Jennie Finch led off with a single and moved to second when Lindsey Collins walked. Allison Andrade's double to left-center drove in pinch-runner Lindsay Robinson but Collins was cut down at the plate. The Wildcats next play host to California in a single game at 6 p.m. Friday night, then face Stanford at 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. ASU plays at the same times -- as host to Stanford Friday night and against California Saturday and Sunday.
