No. 2 Washington Tops No. 4 Cats in Softball
TUCSON, Ariz.--Kim DePaul's two-out home run in the top of the sixth gave No. 2 Washington a 1-0 victory over No. 4 Arizona and the championship of the Pepsi Arizona Softball Classic before 1,420 fans at Hillenbrand Stadium.
The Huskies (3-0) managed only three hits off loser Becky Lemke (1-1). Arizona had six hits off winner Jennifer Spediacci (2-0), but ran itself out of some scoring opportunities in the bottom of the sixth.
UA (1-1) threatened when Erika Hanson and Nicole Giordano led off the Wildcat sixth with infield singles, and Hanson moved to third on a deep liner by Katie Swan. But Hanson was throw out at the plate on a fielder's choice by Toni Mascarenas, then Giordano was thrown out at the plate when she tried to score from second on a single to deep second base by Lauren Bauer.
In the seventh Chrissy Gil hit a one-out single and moved to second on an error by the shortstop, but Spediacci struck out Alison Andrade and got Hanson on a fly ball to left.
Arizona will play No. 5 Southern Mississippi (0-3) in the final game of the tournament at 11 a.m. Sunday. The tournament has no championship game as such, but UW emerged undefeated

Washington scored runs in each of the first five innings, pitcher Jamie Graves allowed only one hit through five innings and UW withstood a couple of Southern Mississippi threats for an 8-6 victory USM Saaturday in the Arizona Pepsi Softball Classic.
Kelly Hauxhurst hit a two-run single to punctuate the No. 2-ranked Huskies' three-run third. Mo Downs also had two RBI for Washington.
The Lady Eagles threatened when trailing 6-2 with base runners on first and third after Channika Gant hit a solo home run in the fifth, but Graves struck out Kenya Peters to end the inning. USM scored again off reliever Bridger Wilcox in the sixth and twice in the bottom of the seventh on a Chrystal Stevens' RBI triple and a sac fly by Erin Johnson before Graves re-entered.
She gave up a single and a sac fly then induced a ground ball to end the game.
