O'Brien Hurls Complete Game in Cougars' 9-6 Victory
TUCSON, Ariz.Washington State scored four runs in the first and senior lefty Matt O'Brien threw his second complete game of the season as the Cougars took their second straight from Arizona, 9-6, in Tucson Friday night.
WSU improved to 16-25, 4-10 in the Pac-10. The Cats fell 21-25 and 6-11.
Two walks, a hit batsman and an error allowed Washington State to take a 4-0 first-inning lead despite collecting just two hits. After the first, Wildcat senior left-hander Rob Shabansky (2-4) settled down, holding the Cougars to just two walks over the next five innings.
O'Brien (7-3) gave up 12 hits, but walked just one and only three of the Cats' runs were earned.
Junior second baseman Trevor Mote drove in four runs for the Cats with a double and his fourth home run of the season. Senior center fielder Troy Gingrich recorded three hits and scored three runs.
The two teams conclude their series Saturday at 1 p.m. at Sancet Field.
