Arizona Takes Series with 3-2 Win over UW
SEATTLE -- Arizona, behind a five-inning, one-hit relief performance from Mike Meyer, edged the Washington baseball team, 3-2, in a Pac-10 baseball game Sunday at Husky Ballpark to win the three-game series, two games to one.
Meyer (1-2) entered the game in the fifth inning after starter Rob Shabansky had been hit in the leg by a line drive off the bat of UW center fielder Justin Drake. Meyer gave up a single to shortstop Tila Reynolds -- and both Drake and Reynolds eventually scored to tie the game at 2-2 -- but went on to retire the last 14 Husky batters of the game.
Arizona (20-21 overall, 5-7 in the Pac-10) won the game in the sixth when Erik Torres doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by second baseman Trevor Mote. Washington fell to 13-17 overall and 3-6 in the conference.
UW starter Matt Massingale (3-4) worked a complete game in the loss. The junior righty allowed three runs on seven hits and five walks while striking out two. He now has two compete games in his career -- Sunday's loss and a 2-1 loss at UCLA two weeks ago.
Wildcats center fielder Troy Gingrich was the only player for either team to notch more than one hit. He was 2-for-5 with two walks, a run and two stolen bases.
Washington next faces NAIA champion Lewis-Clark State Tuesday at 6:30 at Husky Ballpark before travelling to face No. 7 Stanford next weekend at Sunken Diamond. Next up for the Wildcats is a road series at Oregon State.
