Nady Drives in Seven as Bears Top Cats, 26-6
TUCSON, Ariz.-Junior third baseman Xavier Nady homered twice and drove in seven as California defeated Arizona, 26-6, at Hi Corbett Field Saturday night.
California improved to 10-14 with the win, 2-3 in Pac-10 play. Arizona fell to 16-14 and 1-1.
Nady hit a two-run homer in the third inning and a grand slam in the fifth. Junior catcher Mike Tonis added a three-run shot in the second and a two-run double in third. Senior infielder Tommy Callen scored five runs for the Bears. Seven Cal starters scored at least three runs.
Senior right-hander Brad Steele (3-3) went 5.2 innings to earn the victory for California. Sophomore lefty Brian Pemble (2-2) allowed nine runs over 2.2 innings to take the loss. The Cats set a school record by allowing 26 earned runs.
The Cats hit four home runs, including sophomore right fielder Shelley Duncan's 10th of the year. Duncan became the sixth player in Arizona history with 30 career homers.
The teams will conclude their series Sunday at 1 p.m. at Sancet Field.
