Tonis Homers Twice as Bears Pound Cats Again, 24-14

TUCSON, Ariz.Junior catcher Mike Tonis homered twice and drove in five as California rolled to a 24-14 victory over Arizona in Tucson Sunday afternoon. The Bears took two of three in the weekend series.
California improved to 11-14 with the win, 3-3 in Pac-10 play. Arizona fell to 16-15 and 1-2.
The Bears jumped to a 7-0 advantage after three and a half innings, but Arizona came back to take the lead with an eight-run fourth. California responded with a nine-run seventh to take the lead for good.
Tonis and junior shortstop Jason Williams each scored four runs for the Bears. Freshman left fielder David Weiner collected four hits, scored three runs and drove in three more. Eight California batters had at least two hits.
Senior right-hander Jon Cuccias (1-0) went 2.1 innings to earn the victory. Senior southpaw Tony Milo (2-4) took the loss for the Cats.
Junior first baseman Ernie Durazo had four hits and four RBI for the Cats, including his fifth home run of the season.
Arizona returns to action Tuesday when it plays host to Grand Canyon at 7 p.m.
