Diggins' Complete Game Gives Cats Win in Pac-10 Opener
TUCSON, Ariz.Sophomore right-hander Ben Diggins struck out seven in a complete game eight-hitter, leading Arizona to a 4-1 victory over California Friday night in the Cats' Pac-10 opener.
Arizona improved to 16-13 with the win, while the Golden Bears fell to 9-14, 1-3 in league play.
Diggins improved to 6-0 with his third complete game of the season, lowering his earned-run average to 2.20. He allowed eight hits, seven of them singles, while walking just one. Cal's only run came in the third, when the Bears strung together a hit batsman, an infield single, a walk and another hit batsman with two outs. Diggins also worked out of a bases-loaded, no outs jam in the eighth with a double play and a ground out.
Junior third baseman Trevor Mote and junior shortstop Keoni DeRenne each collected three hits for the Cats. Mote doubled twice, scored a run and drove in another.
Junior shortstop Jason Williams led the Bears at the plate with a pair of singles. Junior third baseman Xavier Nady, a preseason national player of the year candidate, went 1-for-3 and drove in Cal's only run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the third. Sophomore right-hander Trevor Hutchinson (2-3) gave up three runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings for the Golden Bears.
The teams will meet in the second game of the series Saturday at 7 p.m. at Hi Corbett Field.
