15th-ranked ASU Baseball Pounds No. 25 Arizona 32-3
TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State baseball team set a school record with 54 total bases as the Sun Devils defeated 25th-ranked Arizona 32-3 at Packard Stadium this afternoon. ASU improves to 17-4, while the Wildcats fall to 13-10 on the season.
Arizona State's 32 runs was the most in the last 20 years and ranks third all-time for a single game. The seven homeruns hit by Sun Devils tied the school record set in 1987. The 29-run winning margin ranks third on the ASU charts for a single game. The 27 hits ties for seventh for a single game.
Arizona set school records in most earned runs and total bases by an opponent and tied the school record for most homeruns by an opponent.
The Sun Devils scored in every inning except the first and third innings. The Wildcats scored all three runs in the fifth inning.
For the Devils, third baseman Mike Lopez went 2-for-4 with six RBI and two runs scored as he hit two homeruns on the afternoon. Second baseman Brooks Conrad went 4-for-7 with five RBI and three runs scored while hitting his fifth homer on the year. Catcher Casey Myers had a 3-for-4 day at the plate with five runs scored and four RBI. Left fielder Mitch Jones hit his nation-leading 15th homerun of the season while rightfielder Jonah Martin hit his second homer of the year. Sophomore Trent Pratt blasted his first homerun of the season.
Picking up his fourth win of the season was starter Chad Pennington (4-0) who went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Relievers Franco Pezely and Bryce Kartler combined to shutout the Wildcats over the last four innings.
Taking the loss for the Wildcats was starter Brian Pemble who lasted 1.2 innings, giving up five runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Arizona used a total of eight pitchers over the course of the game.
Offensively for the 'Cats, Shelley Duncan went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored, hitting his ninth homerun of the season. Second baseman Trevor Mote had a 3-for-4 day at the plate with a run scored.
