No. 15 ASU Baseball Hands No. 25 Arizona 9-7 Loss
TEMPE, Ariz. - Second baseman Brooks Conrad hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to break a seven-all tie and lift Arizona State to a 9-7 win over Arizona this evening at Packard Stadium in a non-conference matchup. The Sun Devils improve to 16-4 while the Wildcats fall to 13-9 on the year.
Arizona jumped out to a seven run lead, scoring runs in the first three innings. The Sun Devils would tie up the game with runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. ASU would take the lead for good in the seventh.
Third baseman Mike Lopez was hit by a pitch with one out in the seventh. With two outs on the board, sophomore Brooks Conrad hit a homerun to right centerfield to break the tie and put ASU in the lead.
ASU reliever Luke Field (1-1), who entered the game in the sixth, pitched four shutout innings with four strikeouts to get his first win of the season. Field retired 12 of 13 batters faced. Starter Jon Switzer went 3.1, allowing five earned runs on eight hits in a no-decision.
Reliever Tony Milo (1-3) would take the loss the Arizona, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Starter Ben Diggins, went 4.1 innings, with four earned runs on six hits in a no-decision.
For the Devils, Conrad went 1-for-3 with three RBI while Jeff Phelps went 1-for-5 with two RBI. Jonah Martin and Jeff Duncan each collected two hits for the Devils.
Troy Gingrich, Keoni DeRenne and Ryan O'Donnell each had two hits for the Wildcats with DeRenne collecting three RBI as well.
