Cats Use 12-Run Sixth Inning to Post 21-7 Victory over USF
TUCSON, Ariz.Sophomore right fielder Shelley Duncan matched his career high with four hits and junior Ryan O'Donnell drove in four runs as a pinch-hitter in one inning as No. 19 Arizona defeated San Francisco, 21-7, here Saturday afternoon.
The Cats improved to 4-1 on the year, while USF fell to 0-3.
Arizona's run total for the game was its best since a 21-8 victory over New Mexico on Jan. 31, 1998, in Tucson. The Cats' 12-run, 6th inning outburst was its greatest single-inning run total since they posted 16 in the seventh inning of a 40-10 victory over St. Francis on Feb. 22, 1995, also in Tucson.
Duncan, junior third baseman Erik Torres and freshman third baseman Matt Abram each drove in three runs for the Cats. Duncan has posted at least one RBI in 12 straight games, dating back to last season. Torres extended his career-long hitting streak to 11.
Abram entered the game in the sixth inning as a pinch-hitter and drove in two runs with a single. The Cats batted around, and Abram came up again, delivering another two-run single.
Arizona sophomore catcher Chris Cunningham also hit his first career home run in the contest.
Senior right-hander Mike Crawford (1-1) worked 6.0 innings for the Cats, allowing just five hits, to earn the win. Sophomore righty Peter Dunkle (0-1) took the loss for the Dons after giving up five runs (four earned) in 2.1 innings.
Junior left fielder Danny Trumble singled and homered for USF, driving in a pair of runs.
