Duncan Homers Twice as Cats Win Season-Opener
TUCSON, Ariz Right fielder Shelley Duncan homered twice and drove in five as 19th-ranked Arizona topped St. Mary's, 11-2, in the season-opener for both squads here Friday afternoon.
Duncan, who collected two home runs and five RBI in last season's first game against St. Mary's as well, has four career multi-homer games, tying Arizona's career record previously shared by Dennis Haines and George Arias. His five RBI were one shy of his career-best. Duncan and sophomore left fielder Kenny Huff went back-to-back in the first inning.
All but one of the Cats' starters collected at least one hit, and Arizona scored in seven of the eight innings in which it batted.
Sophomore right-hander Ben Diggins earned the win with 5.0 innings of three-hit work. Diggins combined with sophomore righty Robert Schulz and freshman right-hander Scott Burns to limit the Gaels to two runs on five hits.
Sophomore center fielder Jason Waugh singled, tripled and drove in a run for St. Mary's.
The two teams will meet again Saturday at 1 p.m.
